Practical Solutions to Healthy Knees

Would you like to strengthen your knees and move with more confidence in daily life and practice?

Practical Solutions for Healthy Knees is a down-to-earth, practical yoga workshop designed to help you understand, strengthen and confidently use your knees, both in yoga and everyday movement.

If you’ve ever wanted to strengthen your knees,  move more comfortably and feel more confident walking, practising or moving day to day, this workshop will give you clear, practical tools to do exactly that.

Rather than avoiding certain movements or protecting your joints out of fear, this session shows you how intelligent, targeted movement can build strength, stability and ease throughout the whole lower body.

If you are looking for yoga for knee pain, knee strengthening, or simple strength and mobility exercises you can use at home, this session offers clear, accessible guidance you can return to again and again.

What You'll Learn:

In this workshop, you’ll explore how the knee works and why discomfort is often influenced by what’s happening in the hips and ankles as much as the knee itself.

.

You’ll discover:

• What a healthy knee does, including normal ranges of movement and hyperextension

• Common yoga myths about knees (such as “never lock your knees” or “don’t let your knee go past your toes”)

• How the hips, knees and ankles function together as a connected kinetic chain

• Why knee sensitivity often has roots above or below the joint itself

Practical Movement & Strength Work:

This workshop is highly practical and movement-based. You’ll be guided through simple, repeatable exercises designed to build strength and control around the knee joint.

.

You’ll explore:

• Co-contraction of the quadriceps and hamstrings for joint stability

• Glute strength to better support the knees and IT band

• Functional movements such as bridges and wall squats

• Ways to adapt familiar movements including lunges, squats, pigeon, and kneeling positions so you feel stronger and more comfortable

.

All exercises can be done at home using simple props such as a chair, blanket, cushion or wall.

For Sensitive Knees & Knee Conditions:

This recording is especially supportive if you live with:

• Knee pain or general knee sensitivity

• Osteoarthritis

• Bursitis

• Previous knee injury or instability

.

The emphasis is on “Goldilocks loading” – finding the right amount of movement to keep joints strong, mobile and supported, without overloading or flaring symptoms.

Rather than stopping movement, you’ll learn how to adapt and continue safely.

Who this is For:

• Yoga practitioners with knees that are stiff, sore or don’t always feel reliable

• Yoga teachers who want clearer, evidence-informed understanding of knee mechanics

• Anyone wanting safer, more confident movement in lunges, squats and weight-bearing activities

• People who have been told to avoid certain movements and want to understand what is truly necessary

• Anyone who’d like to maintain strong, capable legs for daily life

• Curious movers interested in anatomy and intelligent movement

What You'll Gain:

• A clearer understanding of how your knees function in movement

• Practical tools to build strength and move with more ease

• Improved coordination between feet, ankles, knees and hips

• Greater confidence to move without fear-based restrictions

• A reusable toolkit of exercises for long-term knee support

What To Expect:

• A friendly, accessible teaching style combining explanation and movement

• Gentle but effective strengthening work for the whole lower body

• Clear exploration of alignment, tracking and joint control

• Options to work within your own comfortable range

• A calm, progressive pace with time to feel and integrate

• A restorative finish to support integration and ease

Equipment Used:

• Chair and wall

• Blankets and cushions

• Yoga blocks or books

• Strap or resistance band

• Small ball (optional)

Foam roller (optional)

Closing Note:

This recording offers a practical, confidence-building approach to healthy knees in yoga and movement, helping you build strength, trust your body, and move with greater ease for years to come.

About Catherine

With a Masters in Ballet Studies, Catherine Annis has over 40 years yoga experience and has been practicing movement nearly all her life.  Originally a professional dancer, she discovered yoga in the mid 1970s and has studied various styles of yoga and movement including Iyengar, Astanga and Hatha, as well as Pilates.

Catherine began teaching yoga in 2004 and has taught thousands of hours of classes whilst continuing to study and research yoga and movement.  Catherine taught in all the leading yoga studios in London for many years and was invited to join the teacher advisory board and lead the Triyoga teacher training.  Noticing that trainees consistently asked for more detail about anatomy and biomechanics, she created the Intelligent Yoga Teacher Training Course in 2017, a 12 month, anatomically focused yoga teacher training qualification recognised by Yoga Alliance Professionals.

Catherine Annis Yoga offers a wide range of live and on-demand and CPD workshops (British Wheel of Yoga and Yoga Alliance Professionals).  She has been invited to create themed courses for leading businesses and charities, for example: Network Rail, The ME Society and The Pilates Foundation.  In 2024 she was approached by the Army to create a course introducing yoga to their personal trainers and launched the course Mindful Movement for Fitness  Professionals in the Armed Forces (recognised by YMCA Awards).  This course provides existing gym instructors the skills to incorporate meditation, yoga and breathing techniques into their current training programmes.

Catherine teaches regular retreats in the UK and internationally and is recognised as a Senior Teacher at Yoga Alliance Professionals and an Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher (E-RYT® 500) and a Continuing Education Provider (YACEP ) at Yoga Alliance US.  She is currently enrolled on the SIRPA chronic pain practitioner course and has joined DGR Interactive, the world class training in rehabilitation and biomechanics.
