For me, doing yoga before I go to bed changes my sleep completely.
I tend to sleep deeper and I wake up feeling refreshed. Yoga relaxes the body - and the body is connected to the mind - so the mind and body both relax before you go to sleep.
Often when I go to sleep with a busy mind, I will be busy in my sleep. I rarely have difficulty falling asleep, but I wake up pretty tired from all the things I felt I needed to do while sleeping.
If you know that feeling, doing yoga just before bed is really going to help you. If you are one of those people who can’t even get to sleep because of your busy mind, practicing mindful yoga can help still your thoughts long enough to fall asleep. In general, your sleep will be much more relaxed when you practice yoga before bed.
Here are some tips for bedtime yoga:
Start your bedtime yoga with the intention of deep relaxation. Visualize and state that you are going to sleep soundly and deeply.
2 Let go
Give yourself permission to let go during the session. Weather it’s letting go of tension in the body or letting go of thoughts.
Pay attention to what is happening in your body and mind. What are you thinking right now? Acknowledge it but then ask yourself if it’s needed right now. Let it go for the night.
4 Stay with your breath
By continuously coming back to your breath, you come back to the present. Being in the present is deeply relaxing.
5 Don’t push
Bedtime yoga is not about building up a sweat. It’s not about pushing your boundaries. It’s about just being aware and getting comfortable in your poses.
6 Support yourself
If you find a particular pose relaxing, support yourself with pillows etc. and allow yourself to stay in the pose for longer.
7 Restorative poses
Restorative poses are great to help you to relax. They are a set of poses that you can really spend some time in.
Incorporating twists into your bedtime yoga routine will help release tension in the back.
